The element X and Y

So, let’s say there are 2 elements, X and Y. X does not have a fix shape. X expands and contract rather fast. Under good care, it can be melted easily. X has a strong reaction with element gold, silver and diamond. X is very attracted to Y. X is often regarded as very expensive and useful aesthetical wise. The maintenance cost of X is very high. Being a very explosive element, inexperience individuals are not encouraged to own any of element X and for those who do, always handle with care.

Y also doesn’t have a shape. Y often changes shapes and melt according to element X. General chemical tests suggest that Y has very strong reaction with ethanol contents and nicotine. Without presence of X, Y is often regard as nothing but useless. As of now, there are only a handful of good products out of element Y. There are, however, high concentration of substandard product of Y.

So what's X and Y? Chem Students? Com'on!! ;)

RESIT Tutorials for HBoM

This was the content of the email that I received a while ago with the titled subject:

"Dear Student,
We hope that you have successfully passed the two HBoM examination papers. While the results will not be available to you until early June, we do know from previous years that some students will need to resit in July. For those students we organise revisions tutorials before the end of the summer term. Below is the timetable for these sessions this year. Please make a note of these dates, particularly if you think that there is a risk that you may not have passed a sit paper.
Best wishes"

I had the shock of my life!! Thank God, crossing my fingers tight now =( will I make it? Faith! Faith!!! Why are you thinning fast now?!! You know I need you the most now, oh please, stay...

My dream PC (as of 25/5/2009)

After googled a bit, here's a dream PC that I would like to have:

2 X Intel® Core™ i7 processor Extreme Edition 965 (3.20Ghz, 8MB L2 cache, 6.4GT/sec)
Soundblaster™ XFi™ Titanium PCIe card
32MB 1067 MHz Tri Channel DDR3 SDRAM [8x4G]
Hard Drive: 4 TB Serial ATA (4x1TB) 7200Rpm Dual HDD Config Raid 0
3 X SLI 1GB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce™ GTX285 graphics card
Killer NIC™ Gaming Card
Blu-Ray RW

And of course the other basics such as power supply, a promising cooling solution, card reader, bluetooth 3.0 (not in market yet), wireless full N-card, and etc...

So, the question is, how much would it cost? how am I gonna afford it? and what the h*ll am I gonna do with such powerful machine? Ok here's the answer to the third question, I want my house to be completely controlled by this giant (ie. electrical appliances, lights, etc.). Something like the one Iron Man movie has.

Too far fetch? duh... ok, I should start studying now, STOP DREAMING!!!!

The intolerable KIASU Syndrome

I just can't understand, why some people just can't stop stressing that I only have one more to go??!!! Yes, I do have only one more to go, and it's quite some days away, but hell, you're NOT IN MY COURSE!!! How on earth would you understand?!!!! You're not even me!!! I'm not some genius who read things once and save it in my mind forever!!! I know my own capability! I have my own reasons to start early! and it's NONE OF YOUR F*cKing business!!!! dew!

And you think you F*cKing own the library? Only you and your friends that have exams in a few days time deserve the library spaces?!!! Come on, I'm not sitting on your back to do my revision ok! What do you mean we are fighting with you guys? who are genuinely having exams? What fight?!!! Don't you realise we are doing different course? and what do you mean genuinely having exams?! So the 11th is NOT A GENUINE EXAM?!! Ours maybe merely MCQs DIQs or TF, but they are not some primary school kid stuff done by a university student! At the very least, to me, I think it's no easy task!

Cut the crap man, least we are not as KIASU AS YOU people!!! Always asking about other's scores! and comparing our degrees with yours!! I mean it when I say I don't wanna talk about it! So why ask?!!! Well, if you like it, I'd like to make it clear to YOU: Yes, yours is just a B. Sc!!! JUST A BSC!!! and mine is something that carries extra salutation in front! So what? you jealous? go crack your ass to work on entering this field then! and stop complaining that you do the job while we claim the honour! There's a reason of why we study 5 years and you 3! Shut up! We have got the authority and you don't! So don't compare!

Why wanna say which job is more noble than the other?!!! we depend on each other in this world ok! Even the scavengers are noble, at least to help you this bunch of snobbish vagina clean up your feces! You think what, only educated people deserve to live on earth? We all do ok!

And so what if my course cover the sense of humanity? After all we are dealing with humans, it is perfectly sensible to learn such stuff, it is only people like you who label them as rubbish not sensible to realise the importance of it while working your ass off just for the science stuff.

I'm not discriminating anyone or any course here, but I just hope you will understand, what we are doing is just the same as everyone else. it's just a freaking degree! What's the fuss about that?!!! Why wanna compare?!!!

p/s: I don't mean to insult anyone taking Bsc, but just this group of individuals that can't stop comparing, can't stop prooving the point that they are having exams!

Selamat Jalan TRS

Bon voyage Miss!

p/s: just remember to send my regards to the char kuey tiaw, satay, durian, dim sum and the wonders of that place I call home for me... and STILL NYAMPAH!!! hehehehe

So, when's my turn la? People finish exam, my 9-5s haven't finish. People start planning their summer, I start my preperation for the 11th June. Apa la ini?!!! What a life!

I DECLARE, TODAY IS MY ANNUAL HIBERNATION DAY. and I wish every other day was today! ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

Weathering home

Finally, the weather reminds me of home, well I'm not referring to the temperature, but at the very least, I can go out in shorts and flip flops... It's been raining on and off these days, the sky is moody (well a few days before it was so sunny that even 7pm looks just like 12pm, and it almost got me late to appointments in the evenings). Each time I look out the window, I could vividly recall the Sunday mornings where I could just laze around with the aircond on at lowest temperature back at home, and here, opening the window wide just made me feel the same. Ok, I miss home.

Seriously, should I put a countdown for going back or my exam? or the day my results are revealed?!!! Gosh, it really get me on my nerves each time I think of it. SCARED SHIT!!!!!

Pray pray pray...

And all the best to those sitting for exams around this time of the year! Gud luck!

So it's cardiomyopathies

Good news, indeed, good news. And I pretty much doubt the lecture will be covered in later years. Yay! Exam short by one lecture, of course happy la!!!! Still, it's just one lecture. Why can't it be like...er, one whole chunk of lectureS?? too far-fetch perhaps. And what would happen if the patient that I'm presented with comes with whatever that is in the lectures????!!! Cheeezzeee, I better check out what topic it is, hang on...

Oh crap! It's on Cardiomyopathies. Yes it is crap!!! Cause the lecture notes is hell only one page like this:
Oh yes, I *will* understand what it's all about with this economical (save ink) and environmental friendly (save paper) set of note. Thank you, Mr lecturer! Probably that explains our double digit position in Guardian!

Got My Sphymomanometer!!!

Yay!! Finally, it's here! Ok, I should probably get back on my CVS instead of playing with this thing. Anyhow, here it is:

Aneroid Sphygmomanometer set. It comes with a bag!!! Though the bag is... er... nevermind...

Inflating the cuff up to 280mmHg. I wanna try 300 but it's really not a good idea considering the pain.
And my veins bulge out like this, you still want 300? nah... no thanx...

Positioning the stethoscope at brachial artery to listen for systolic and diastolic moments. The patient should extend (straighten) their arm instead of as shown in the picture (did that because I have to hold the camera!).

Oh and if you're wondering how to use it? well, to make it simple, inflate the cuff up about 200mmHg (assuming the one which you are listening to falls between the normal distribution of blood pressure), position the stethoscope as shown above on the brachial artery, in which at this point there should be no sound. Deflate the cuff slowly and at certain point, you will hear the weird "tuk tuk" sound, that's the systolic pressure, note that down. And as you continue to deflate, at certain point, the sound will disappear, that's the diastolic pressure. Note that down too.

The concept behind it? I'm just to lazy to put them down in words, but bottom line, systolic pressure is the pressure when you heart contracts and diastolic is when your heart relax. That's why you get X/Y (ie. 120/80) when you get your blood pressure measured in hospital. X would be your systolic and otherwise. Also, to have a blood pressure of 120/80 is rather odd. In fact most teens' readings are below that. Probably 110/75? Girls may even have readings below that. The 120/80 is just the arbitrary value.

And if at this point, you still wonder what is a sphygmomanometer, it's the device to measure your blood pressure. Normally it should come with the mercury bar but I bought this one which uses an analog meter considering the price and risk of me spilling or breaking the mercury bar.

Aite, should probably get on with study now. Excited!

The life that awaits me

"Exams....

Just to clear up the rumours, we aim to release the exam results by 3pm May
20 via Blackboard"

Got this email from Kat. Was it really a relief? Or is it just another seemed-long wait to know the truth. The truth about my efforts during the last two terms, the truth about my level of competence in MCBoM and HBoM. Year one's almost drawing its finale, and I'm still in the midst of no where. Cardiovascular lessons are already half way through, and all I did was anticipating the sphygmomanometer that I bought a couple of days ago to arrive, to practise my clinical skills, when I am not required to do so. And to remind me that I'm still lost, I just found out what's the difference between Stroke volume and Cardiac output a couple of days ago, when I should have known it weeks ago.

I need prayers!!!! and Lucks now!!!!

Spent my weekend, no, burnt my weekend watching Ampang Medikal. I would say it's the Malaysian version of Greys but the point is, it portrays what would most likely to happen during our HO or as students in UK name it, F1. Well, I'm not sure how far the truth goes in the series but as far as I'm concerned, the show is portraying things my siblings shared with me through out the years. 36 hours non-stop working, then you get a 5pm to 7am break, then another 36 hours. You probably have to sustain that in a few weeks interval and it will last for 2 long HO years. Gosh, what a life awaits me. I really hope to stay forever as a student now.

And as an extra ingredient, a HO will have to sustain the pressure from the ones up above him or her. I could just imagine myself standing beside the bed don't know what to do when a patient suddenly drop dead right before my own eyes. And just when I was about to doubt more, the nurse's plot came along. Yes, nurses are perhaps our saviors in the hospitals. At most times, they have been in that field for ages, but because of the word nurse, they are no where near this 5 years course's reward. Seriously, don't they deserve to be called Medical Officers as well? Well, I'm not saying ordinary nurses but for those who have serve the field for ages, of one that would think like a doctor does, one that posses equivalent level of knowledge. Back to the point, the nurses are likely to tell us what to do especially when we have just started our HO tenure.

Conclusion? Learn your lessons well and make sure you have your skills at fingertips! Ok, I'm telling myself.

p/s: the post earlier entitled "Random" was a subplot of the show that make me ponder more about relationship in the hospital.

Did I marry the right person?

During one of our seminars, a woman asked a common question. She said, "How
do I know if I married the right person?"
I noticed that there was a large man sitting next to her so I said, "It
depends. Is that your husband?"
In all seriousness, she answered "How do you know?"

Let me answer this question because the chances are good that it's weighing
on your mind.

Here's the answer.
EVERY relationship has a cycle. In the beginning, you fell in love with
your spouse / partner . You anticipated their call, wanted their
touch, and liked their idiosyncrasies (unconventional behavior/habit).

Falling in love with your spouse wasn't hard. In fact, it was a completely
natural and spontaneous experience.
You didn't have to DO anything. That's why it's called "falling" in love...
Because it's happening TO YOU .

People in love sometimes say, "I was swept of my feet." Think about the
imagery of that expression. It implies that you were just standing there;
doing nothing, and then something came along and happened TO YOU

Falling in love is easy It's a passive and spontaneous experience. But
after a few years of marriage, the euphoria (excitement) of love
fades. It's the natural cycle of EVERY relationship Slowly but surely,
phone calls become a bother (if they come at all), touch is not always
welcome (when it happens), and your spouse's idiosyncrasies , instead
of being cute, drive you nuts.

The symptoms of this stage vary with every relationship, but if you think
about your marriage, you will notice a dramatic difference between the
initial stage when you were in love and a much duller or even angry
subsequent stage.

At this point, you and/or your spouse might start asking, "Did I marry the
right person?"
And as you and your spouse reflect on the euphoria of the love you once
had, you may begin to desire that experience with someone else.
This is when marriages breakdown People blame their spouse for their
unhappiness and look outside their marriage for fulfillment.

Extramarital fulfillment comes in all shapes and sizes. Infidelity is the
most obvious.
But sometimes people turn to work, a hobby, a friendship, excessive
TV, or abusive substances.

But the answer to this dilemma does NOT lie outside your marriage. It lies
within it.
I'm not saying that you couldn't fall in love with someone else.
You could.

And TEMPORARILY you'd feel better. But you'd be in the same situation a
few years later. Because (listen carefully to this):

THE KEY TO SUCCEEDING IN MARRIAGE IS NOT FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON; IT'S
LEARNING TO LOVE THE PERSON YOU FOUND.

SUSTAINING love is not a passive or spontaneous experience. It'll NEVER
just happen to you. You can't "find" LASTING love.. You have to "make"
it day in and day out. That's why we have the __expression "the labor of
love." Because it takes time, effort, and energy And most importantly,
it takes WISDOM . You have to know WHAT TO DO to make your marriage
work.

Make no mistake about it. Love is NOT a mystery. There are specific things
you can do (with or without your spouse) to succeed with your marriage.

Just as there are physical laws of the universe (such as gravity), there
are also laws for relationships.
Just as the right diet and exercise program makes you physically stronger,
certain habits in your relationship WILL make your marriage stronger.
It's a direct cause and effect. If you know and apply the laws, the results
are predictable... you can "make"love

Love in marriage is indeed a "decision"... Not just a feeling.

Remember this always:

"God determines who walks into your life. It is up to you to decide who you
let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go."

" Together , We make It Happen", "Be Effective, Get Results", "Do What Is
Right" and " Work Together"

...adapted from forwarded email

perhaps I should really learn from this. Thanx for the sharing.

So what happened during the weekend? and Bank Holiday?

Well, watch a couple of movies and that includes:

Annapolis (06) which eventually inspire me to check for medical careers in TLDM. And what I found was quite promising but still military camp? Maybe some other time.

Wolverin (09)

The interesting bit of this movie that I watch is that it is a workprint version It's the completed movie but some of the graphic outlines have not been removed yet, such as the ropes behind the stunt men and the digital graphic videos that the producer used as follows.

Rather interesting as this is the first time I'm watching workprints and it's an eye-opener to what the director and producers did in the movie to capture its audience.

Paul Blart, Mall Cop (09)
Gosh, why ain't I in love? sweet...

Had a few softwares add on to my Studio as follows:

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, bundled with softwares such as Adobe Bridge CS4 and Adobe Drive CS4. Note the new interface, tab functions and 3d features. I have yet to explore this wonderful program.

Mixcraft. In which I initially wanted to buy a turntable for fun, but it's hell out of a cost. Thus, I resorted to the digital way, mixing music on screen. Of course, this doesn't come with turntable effect as it is in clubs. Seriously, I'm considering DJ as a hobby. Bit too far fetch?

And to boost the bass i have in my room, here you go, SRS Audio Sandbox. And the sound effect is really promising. Advice, best effect with 5.1 speakers. I literally drown myself in the disco mood at night with the beats, but don't do it in WC, cause the wall is so thin that you can hear your neighbour making out.

Got myself 2 Eurodance album, one by Dj Sammy and the other Basshunter. It's really a good deal if you're into this genre. So much so, it may be techno as well.

Recommendations,
Dj Sammy: Heaven, The Boys of Summer, El Condor Paso
Basshunter: I Miss You, Now You're Gone, All I Ever Wanted

Oh yeah, I rearrange my room, now it's in original position. I can have both screens on at the same time do multitask. It's really helpful. Movies while studying? or Homework with movies?

The new arrangement, with the new foldable (inset). seriously, the keyboard ain't typing friendly. Bought it just for hip of it.

The screens are well extended to both displays, allowing multitask. yay!

Went for the MCS Lunch Banquet but nothing much to talk about it. It didn't disappoint me or surprise me. So, yeah, it's just another lunch.

Meanwhile, I really got to get back to my books. Went to ASSL, hoping that I can study there but too bad, not a seat available. And guess what? I walk back home, landed in my room doing nothing beneficial till now!!! But somehow, I am thankful that My exams are sort of over during Easter or where am I gonna find the motivation to study with the over packed library?

Food fact: I sorta like made a new recipe which I call satay pasta, taste good to me.

Presentable? Thanx to Singapore government for the sauce.

So, all in all, was the weekend fruitful? Probably not academic wise.
